Celiac Blood Panel

At the meeting we briefly discussed the blood tests commonly used to test for celiac disease. To the best of my knowledge the tests listed below are still accurate.

The gold standard for diagnosing celiac disease is still the endoscopy. It is normally done after the blood work has been completed. It is absolutely essential for a person to consume gluten during all aspects of testing!

A complete Celiac Blood Panel:
1. Antigliadin IgA and IgG*

2. Anti-tissue Transglutaminase Antibody (tTG), IgA and/or anti-endomysial
An indicator of villi damage [slight damage is not always detected]. These tests are highly specific to CD. However, autoimmune disease can skew the results of these tests.

3. Total serum IgA
Rules out IgA deficiency. This must be run to ensure proper IgA test results.

4. Anti-reticulin IgA
Rarely used but, a very thorough doctor will include this.
